I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was four years old. I remember playing school with my grandparents in Astoria N.Y. I was not only the teacher, but the principal too! I had a bell that I rung to start school. My grandpa was always the "bad" boy who was sent to "my office." My grandfather always said I was destined to be something great....he did not know what it would be, but he knew it would be "something great!" Before my grandfather died, he told me "you really are doing something...great! you are an amazing teacher and you love what you do. Don't listen to anyone who tells you to leave the profession to make more money. I knew what you would be at age 4...a teacher." My grandfather died the next day.I obviously was very close to my grandfather! My parents discouraged my desire to become a teacher for monetary reasons. I can still remember playing school 40 years ago...I am so thankful that I followed his advice and stayed true to myself. I currently teach Primary reading K-2 and there is no greater joy watching my students learn to read in Kindergarten, and then aid their progression through second grade!
ReplyDeleteI am a teacher...and I am proud of what I do!!!1
I think that my destiny to be a teacher started when I was very young and liked to play "school". But I did not realize it until much later. I was bored the summer before my junior yr of high school and decided to volunteer at the park play camp, which was for 3-5 year olds. And that was it: I fell in love with the kids. I remember the feeling I had when it was a good day and all the kids (3 yrs old) were having fun and were actually listening!! We walked in a single file to our spot for lunch (the older counselor was setting up lunch) and 2 of the other camp counselors were like, "How did you do that? They are all quiet and not running around!" LOL All I could do was smile and I think it was then that I realized that this might be what I wanted to do. During the school yr, I seeked out opportunities to work with children to fulfill my community service hours. I worked in a shelter for battered women & children (spent time playing games and doing homework with the children during weekly mom meetings) and I helped coordinate kids events at the park. Being around kids, especially the little ones, was what brought a huge smile on my face and in my heart. In my senior year I was nominated for a Golden Apple Scholarship (A teaching scholarship in Illinois) and after a rigorous essay and interview process I was selected as one of the 60 recipients (out of over 800 applicants) to receive the award! The program offered me financial assistance for college, guidance, workshops, seminars, and summer internships all throughout college until graduation.
ReplyDeleteSo what made me want to become a teacher?
I just knew.
Working with little kids comes natural to me. My heart is completely in it.
If I won the lottery today, I would NOT quit my job; Because it is NOT a job-- it is a Career.
Every day that I teach, I learn something new: About myself, about children, about education and about life.
This past year I had that one teacher moment: A moment that reminded me WHY I became a teacher. I began a new job in Feb and there was a troubled child (whom everyone was pretty tired of dealing with) cried out my name during a violent temper tantrum with another teacher and cried "Where is Ms. Sara?! I need Ms. Sara! She helps me calm down! I need her!" She kicked and screamed violently until I arrived and although she fought me at first as I tried to hug her, a minute later she collapsed in my arms, just crying...and she calmed down within 5 minutes. Then she looked up at me and said "Thank you for calming me down. I love you"
It was then that I was reminded WHY... It was then that I realized that I had a connection/an impact with this little girl who no one seemed to be able to control for very long.(although to this day I am still unsure of just what it was that drew her to me and helped to calm her down, and no one else could figure it out either!) It was probably just Love, Understanding & Patience. =)
And that feeling will stay with me b/c teaching IS a matter of the heart and she taught me something about young children that will stay with me forever:
"Love me when I deserve it the least because that is when I need it the most."
Sorry its so long... and not really 3 reasons... Hard to pinpoint just 3 reasons. I just know that after 8 years of working as a Prek teacher, I can not see myself doing anything else in this world. I am where I was meant to be... and I LOVE it! =)
